ExoMars ( Exobiology on Mars ) is a two-part astrobiology project to search for evidence of life on Mars , a joint mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Russian space agency Roscosmos . The first part, launched in 2016, placed a trace gas research and communication satellite into Mars orbit and released a stationary experimental lander (which crashed). The second part is planned to launch in 2020, and to land the ExoMars rover on the surface, supporting a science mission that is expected to last into 2022 or beyond. [1] [2] [3]

ExoMars ( Exobiology on Mars ) is a large Mars mission to search for biosignatures of Martian life , past or present. This astrobiology mission is currently under development by the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos). [5] The programme includes several spacecraft elements to be sent to Mars on two launches. The ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) and an EDM stationary lander called 'Schiaparelli' are planned for 2016. The TGO would deliver the ESA-built stationary lander and then proceed to map the sources of methane on Mars and other gases, and in doing so, help select the landing site for the ExoMars rover [6] to be launched in 2018 on a Russian heavy lift Proton launch vehicle . The TGO will feature four instruments and will also act as the communication relay satellite for the follow up rover. In 2018 a Roscosmos-built lander is to deliver the ESA-built rover to the martian surface. [4] [5] [7] The rover will also include some Roscosmos built instruments. The mission will be guided from Italy. |

ExoMars ( Exo biology on Mars ) is a European -led robotic mission to Mars currently under development by the European Space Agency (ESA) with collaboration by NASA . Since its inception it has gone through several phases of planning with various proposals for landers, orbiters, launch vehicles, and international cooperation planning, such as the 2009 Mars Exploration Joint Initiative (MEJI) with the United States. As of 2011 [update] , an ExoMars orbiter examining trace gases and a short-life static lander test is planned for 2016, and one rover—ExoMars rover—for 2018. |

ExoMars ( Exo biology on Mars ) is a European -led robotic mission to Mars currently under development by the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA . Originally conceived as a rover with a static ground station, ExoMars was planned to launch in 2011 aboard a Soyuz Fregat rocket. [7] Within the framework of the new Mars Joint Exploration Initiative signed by NASA and ESA in July 2009, the drastically delayed ExoMars mission was combined with other projects to a multi-spacecraft programme divided over two Atlas V -launches: [4] the Mars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGM) was merged into the project, piggybacking a static meteorological lander being slated for launch in 2016. In 2018 the original robotic ESA- rover will be launched, possibly together with a smaller NASA rover called Mars Astrobiology Explorer-Cacher (MAX-C). [6] |
